DEFENCE NEEDS

(To iho Editor.)

Sir, —Your correspondent on the need j for air defence seemed to me unf6r-| tunate in the choice of a nom de plume, i "If You Want Peace Prepare for War" j has not always proved a sound prin-1 ciple. But that does not detract from! the truth, of his contention that for the defence of this country aviation seems jto be somewhat neglected. A strong reserve air force would be of educational value to those who joined it, and would be welcomed generally throughout the1 country, and the knowledge that, in the, event of an international crisis, New Zealand could take care of itself, would surely be a. great relief to the authorities in England. Whether we like it or not, defence we must have, and aviation certainly seems to offer the most effective solution. I am afraid advanced social legislation will not be of much use unless we are in a position to defend it.—l am, etc.,
