UNIONS COALESCE

NEW UNION REGISTERED

About 5000 employees are being joined in the amalgamation of five unions of shop assistants, which will form one union. The unions being absorbed are the Wellington Retail Grocers' Shop Managers' Union; the Wellington Retail Grocers' Assistants' Union; the Wellington Operative Butchers' Union; the Wellington Amalgamated Society of Shop Assistants; and the Napier Retail Shop Assistants' I Union. By , registration granted by the Labour Department yesterday, these unions have now been united in one organisation styled the Amalgamated Society of Shop Assistants. Every class of shop assistant in the Wellington industrial district, with the exception of hairdressers' assistants, will be covered under the fusion. Awards -will be secured on the same basis as those operative at the moment, so that none of the Bodies concerned in the amalgamation lose their identity. Assistants employed in retail soft goods, boot and shoe, leather, fancy goods, hardware, crockery, books and stationery, furriers, furnitui'e, and similar shops are already covered by a general assistants' award. Shop hanas working in jewellers', sports dealers', musical instrument, radio,, photographic, oil and colour shops can conveniently be brought under this award. Separate awards will be required for a number of other trades, such as chemists' establishments, confectionery shops, fish and poultry shops,, cake shops, and like businesses. The task-of organising the new body was carried out by Mr. A. W. Croskery, who was secretary of the Shop Assistants' Union for many years, and who in recent years has been secretary of the Operative Butchers' Union and secretary of the New Zealand Shop Assistants' Federation.
