WORK OF SESSION

FINANCE BILL FIRST

RESTORING WAGES CUTS

PENSIONS INCREASES

The first legislation to be dealt with [ when Parliament meets next week will; i be a Finance Bill, which will provide < for the restoration of salaries to the ] Civil Service and the restoration of ' wages cuts to other workers. The ' Prime Minister (the Rt. Hon. M. J. 1 Savage) reiterated today that the re- ' storations would be retrospective to ! July 1.. The House reassembles next Tues- ; day, when tributes will be paid to the memory of the late Sir William Hall- : Jones. The Finance Bill will be introduced on Wednesday, and will be in charge of the Minister of Finance (the Hon. W. Nash). It is also the Government's intention to introduce next week an Industries and Commerce Bill, which, in the main, will deal with the regulation of prices, and it is the Government's hope that both these measures will be passed before the weekend adjournment. Following these Bills, a Bill will bej introduced to deal with the rehabilita-i tion of mortgagors and the readjust-] ment of mortgages. This legislation is at present being drafted, and will be presented to the House as soon as it is ready, which in all probability will be in the second week of the session. PRESENTATION OF BUDGET. Although no definite date can be given as to when the Budget will make its appearance, it is certain to be early in the session. The Minister of Finance stated today that the material in connection with the Budget was being printed now, but some little time would be required in the consideration of Estimates. The Prime-Minister remarked today that he could not say that the Budget would be ready by July 21, but it would not. be long after that. "The aim of the Government," he said, "will be to bring do\vn the Budget considerably earlier than has been the practice in the past." The restoration of cuts in pensions will not be dealt with by the Finance Bill, as special legislation will be required. The Budget is likely to give some 'indication as to what is to be done about pensions, and a Bill will follow the presentation of the Budget. I
