ROAD CO-OPERATION

MINISTER'S REQUEST

The monthly meeting of the Johnsonville Town Board was held last evening, the chairman, Mr. G. A. Lawrence, presiding. ■ .' «- .

A letter was received from the Minister of Transport (the Hon. R. Semple) asking for the co-operation of the. board in the Motor Vehicles Amendment BilL The Bill, said the letter, was trying to reduce the number of fatalities and injuries resulting from road accidents'. On the motion, of Commissioner Grant, a committee was set up, consisting of the chairman and Commissioners Morgan and Symonds. to consider the Bill and assist as far as possible.

The Wellington Hospital forwarded its annual levies, the figures for Johnsonyille being £569 6s lid for the year 1936^37,,-as against £394 15s 4d for the preceding year. The increase was £174 11s 7d, or 44 per cent., and this made necessary the raising of the hospital rate of Jd in the £1, which the board had offset by a reduction in the general rate, thus making no increase in general levy.

A suggestion was made to the board by Mr. W S. Jones that in view of the fact that for the Centennial celebrations the Government was subsidising local bodies, a permanent monument be erected to take the form of (a) a Town Hall; (b) swimming baths, and (c) a number of cottages. Mr. Jones pointed out that any ofHhese memorials would be self-paying and a means perhaps of raising revenue. It was decided, however, that as the International Exhibition was to be held in Wellington that the board should co-operate with the Wellington authorities in this matter.

Reports from the finance committee, the sanitary inspector, the works foreman, and the works committee were received and adopted.
