PETONE COUNCIL

The Mayor (Mr. A. Scholefield) pre-. sided ;at the meeting of the Petone Borough Council last evening. It was decided to allow taxis to have a stand in front of the Empire Hotel. The Post and Telegraph Department advised thac the manufacture of the necessary cabinets for public call offices in Petone had been held up, but a number of cabinets now under construction should be available within six weeks. The installation of a call-box in the vicinity of the Petone Railway Station was being investigated. The New Zealand Libraries' Association wrote stating that negotiations leading up to the establishment of a national library and regional system had been carried on for some time. An essential preliminary to such an institution was intense local interest. The support of the library committee was asked, and also, perhaps, a- meeting of persons likely to be interested.

The letter was referred to the library committee.

The borough engineer (Mr. C. L. Jackson) advised that the planting of the water works block had been completed for the season. The Maungaraki Road reserve had been planted.

During June permits for buildings to the value of £7870 were issued.

The borough inspector (Mr. G. A. Booth), in his report for June, said that 541 drivers' licences were issued and 28 new drivers tested. The parkipp, of cars without lights at night was prevalent and when not within the rays of the street 'lights they were a danger to traffic using the streets. Action would be taken in future against offenders. '
