LOWER HUTT COUNCIL
The monthly meeting of the Lower Hutt Borough Council was held last evening. Present: Mr. J. W. Andrews (Mayor) and Councillors C. J\ Ashton, R M. Russell. M. Macaskill, P. Dowse, W B. Rainey, Walter Cole, W. A. F. Hall, J. S. Dallenger, and J. Mitchell.
Permission was granted for the hold-, ing of a whippet race meeting on July 18.
The Mayor, Mr. J. W. Andrews, was appointed to represent the council at a meeting which will elect four members to represent the Wellington Province on the New Zealand i centennial committee.
The bylaws committee reported having received a copy of the Magistrate's decision on the council's whippet-racing control bylaw. The matter had been left with the chairman of the committee to discuss with the borough solicitor.
The band committee reported that the Civic Band had played at the Boul cott Farm memorial service and on the recreation ground one Sunday. It was arranged for a Sunday evening concert.
Councillor Rainey reported that the new librarian had commenced her duties. ■
Permission was given for the Lower Hutt Municipal Band to hold a Sunday concert and picture entertainment, the programme to be approved by the Mayor and Councillor Macaskill.
The Waimarie Croquet Club was granted a renewal of its lease of croquet greens on Riddiford Park for £65. or £80 if a fourth green is used..
Councillor Ashton questioned whether the rental was high enough, considering the advance in the price of material and wages. He also questioned the wisdom of giving the club a monopoly of the grounds. The works committee reported that at a meeting of the disputes committee a definition of a tar worker was amicably arrived at. It was also decided that if workers not actually handling tar inadvertently had clothing damaged, such clothing would be replaced.
The engineer was instructed to put m hand the widening of the roadway in Penrose Street where an angle occurs between Hinau and Sherwood Streets.
The tenders of Mr. A.. W. Treseder of £678 7s 6d and £489 8s 6d respectively were> accepted for pumping stations at the new Ford works and at Randwick Road.
In reply to Councillor Ashton the Mayor said that no communication had yet been received from the Government in regard to its policy for the extension of the Waterloo railway line.
