MUNICIPAL BUILDING

EASTBOURNE SCHEME

. By invitation the monthly executive meeting of the Eastbourne Ratepayers' Association last evening was attended by the Mayor (Mr. E. W. Wise) and the Town Clerk (Mr. C. L. Bishop) to explain the loan proposal of £11,000 for a municipal building to house offices, shops, council chambers, fire brigade station, omnibus garage and workshops, and staff accommodation. It was explained that the rates will not be increased as the result of the loan, and that the loan charges will be met by the saving in the payment of rent on present buildings, savings on operation of services, and rents to be received from portions of the new building. •

After fully outlining the scheme and the advantages to be gained by having the borough services under one control, the Mayor, at the conclusion of his address, answered numerous questions.

After the Mayor and Town Clerk had retired a full discussion on the proposal took place, and having regard to the point ..(of view of general efficiency and the fact .that no increase in the rates was anticipated to meet the upkeep of the building and the repayment of the loan, it was resolved that the executive support the scheme as outlined by the Mayor.

A public meeting, will be held on July 27 in the Theatre Royal, when the scheme will be explained, and the poll will be taken on July 29.
