CLERICAL WORKERS

UNIONS' ACTIVITIES

OIL WORKERS' SOCIETY

Steps are being taken to expedite the ' obtaining of an award for the Wellington Clerical Workers' Union. .A meeting of members is to be held on Thursday, at which schedules of wages and conditions drawn up by the executive and committees appointed for the purpose are to be submitted for their approval. Another purpose of the meeting will be to obtain the consent of members to the executive initiating proceedings. preparatory to making application for an award.

The secretary of the iunion, Mr. W. N. Pharazyn, told a "Post" reporter today that the membership of the union is now about 300 and that it is increasing day by day.

The Wellington Oil Office Workers' Society is still pursuing its own course, and, although there has been a conference with the Wellington Clerical Workers' Union, it has not linked up with that body, and there is no: indication that it- intends doing so, according to an officer, of the society. The society was refused registration by.the Registrar of Industrial Unions, but it has lodged an appeal against this decision. This appeal, it was stated today, was lodged before the. passing of the recent I.e. and. A. Amendment Act and has been made under the Act of 1925. It is thought that a.fixture will be available for the hearing of the appeal by the Arbitration Court soon after August 20. The Wellington Clerical Workers' Union intends opposing this appeal.
