WOMEN'S HOCKEY
FIJIAN TEAM
NO MATCH AT TIMARU
There is to be no match between the touring Fijian women's hockey team and South Canterbury at Timaru tomorrow, as was intended when the itinerary was announced. However, a match will be played at Ashburton in its place. , ,
The South. Canterbury Hockey Association has adopted the attitude that they agreed to have the match when they were informed that the members of the team were all Fijians, but since it. has been known that the majority oi! the players are either half-castes or whites the association has been anxious to cancel the match, and recently decided to advise that it was not prepared to field a team against the visitors.
This last-minute withdrawal of the South Canterbury Association might have been very awkward for the New Zealand Association but for the willingness of Ashburton to have the match, but the tour will- now be run according to the itinerary which has already been 'announced, except for the alteration in tomorrow's match. After their game at Ashburton the visitors will play >Otago and Eastern, then coming on to Wellington, where they will play a representative team on July 25. The only Test match of the tour will be played at Wellington •on August 8. .
