INSTITUTE UNLUCKY
Although Waterside had decidedly the better of the first half against Institute Old Boys at Kelburn Park, Institute were unlucky that their powerful offensives in the second spell did not bear fruit. A draw would have been a better indication of the opportunities, but the stumbling block was the excellent play of the Waterside 'keeper. Waterside kept their halftime lead of 2-1. The teams were:— - Waterside. —Ward; Abernethy, Topliss; Reid, Longbottom, Cocks; Robb, Thompson, James, Dunsmuir, Urwin. Institute Old Boys.—King; Watson, A. McLean; R. McLean, Boyes, Hicks; Marshall, Bilby, Ward, R. Sutherland, Tanner. Play started in driving rain, and the greasy ball was almost unmanageable. | Waterside, however, were kept on the j attack by the fine distribution of Lpng- J bottom, and after many opportunities had been lost the forwards succeeded in passing King, who was in good! form in the Institute goal. Urwin and Dunsmuir drove down the wing and Janes's short drive from Unvin s centre was unstoppable. Waterside. kept up the pressure, although Institute's frequent breakaways were dangerous. It was in one of these that Tanner crossed neatly from the line and Ward landed a beautiful first-timer. Waterside, however, launched a coun-ter-attack, and just before half-time went into the lead again, Dunsmuir scoring—luckily—from a scramble. In the scoreless second half the outstanding feature was the efforts of Waterside's goalkeeper, Ward, who was often brilliant. Marshall, Institutes right-winger, was mainly responsible for keeping the defence busy, but promising movements broke down through faulty centring. Three times Institute almost scored, but the game ended: — Waterside 2 Institute Old Boys 1 Referee: Mr. E. McQueen.
