FIELDS AND FROM

WEATHER OUTLOOK GOOD

After the storm of the weekend the weather has cleared, and there is every prospect of a fine day tomorrow, which must necessarily add materially to the enjoyment of the public. The track was in great order last week, and as it was then very firm it should be benefited more than else from the recent storm.

The mode of betting has been changed to the win-and-place system, ■which operated for a few meetings at the Park a-couple of seasons ago. The lowest unit of investment will now be 10s instead of 5s as previously. The usual rail and road transport will be available. A special - race train will leave Lambton Station at noon tomorrow, and ordinary train (change at Woburn) will depart at 12.20 p.m. The return fare is 2s. The following is a review of the form: —

rBELIMINAKY HANDICAP, £120 (trotters only); 3.42 class; 1% miles. : Don Giovanni .. scr Benegado 24 '. IMry Brooks .. scr Waikato Prince . 24 ''Little Keta ....scr Earl Bingeu ... 30 Margaret Parrish scr Bay ... 38 Worthy Star ... 12 Mabel Chimes .. 30 The South Island representation in the Preliminary Handicap is better - than usual for this class. Don Giovanni won over two miles at Timaru, ~■ but was not very impressive. Fairy • Brooks was placed in the same race: ". Little Reta has been in the money \ lately, and a repetition of her best track work would make her dangerous. Margaret Parrish makes no ap- - peal. Renegade is usually a quick be- ". ginner, and a mile and a half suits him • admirably. Waikato Prince has done ', no recent racing. Last season he - earned a big reputation over all dis- • tances. He was more than 36yds better - than Captain Bolt over a mile and a ' half at the Manawatu Meeting in March. '. Lack of racing may find him hard • pressed to cope with Helen's Bay, ' whose 3min 26 4-ssec at Washdyke recently was a very fine effort. She does not stay well, but has a good '" turn of speed. Backers may prefer ; Helen's Bay, Waikato Prince, and - Renegade.

GRACEFIELD TRIAL HANDICAP, £100; ; 3.43 class; 1% miles. - Aide de Camp . scr Monetary scr • Coral Prince .. scr Native Son .... scr " Dual scr Our War scr " Dusky Chum ... scr Ping scr Epilogue scr Pirate King ... scr Ideal scr Sunshine Susie . scr Lucky Jack .... scr Superior Bank . scr " When Superior Rank finished fourth -in the New Zealand Derby he beat, "among others, Pot Luck and Gaillard. Pot Luck has since won three races • on end, and Superior Rank must therefore be regarded as a very likely prospect in the Gracefield Trial Handicap. He is a well-bred colt and has previ- . ously proved his mettle at Hutt Park. ■ Our War has been placed on three occasions, and he was backed to beat a good one, in Blair Athol, at Ashburton on Boxing Day. Our War finished a good fourth in that record- - run maiden race. Coral Prince has '.' been racing for years without leaving • the maiden ranks. He has twice gone close to doing so this season. Dual, Dusky Chum, Ideal, and Monetary have fair credentials. Of the uriraced .' horses, Lucky Jack is a good-looking, well-bred three-year-old. The favourites should be Superior Rank, Our War, and Lucky Jack. 2.10 ■ HUTT HANDICAP, £130; 3.3D class; Z% miles.

- Brigadier scr Trevor de Oro .. 12 • Carageea scr War Bird X; ' Happi scr Lady Ann •!<} Hermea scr Moana Tama .. 24 . Great Chum ... scr Ace Pot 30 ■ Itanfurly Lass . scr Aerial Boy .... iv - Slippery Sara ... scr Casino ....... Ib ■ Hidden Charm . 12 OrleiKh Mjlls ... 48 ,' Oversight .... 12

Carrageen is presented with a golden opportunity in the mixed field for the •: Hutt Handicap. He has shown good -trials, and was very unlucky to be : beaten into third place in the Levels • Handicap at Timaru. Th'e'3min 27 2-5 '• sec he registered in that race was well outside his known- ability. Brigadier has been successful previously on "the course, but he finds a mile and a -- half plenty far enough. Kanfurly : Lass is a recent Auckland winner. '• Hidden Charm divided Trireme and • Carrageen at Timaru, but was very 4 lucky to do so. Moana Tama also defeated Carrageen, at Oamaru.but since then he has failed to begin right : Trevor de Oro is a smart pacer, 'trained on the course. Ace Pot was : a double winner at the New Year and ■is useful. He should beat his stablemate, Casino. A likely trio consists of Carrageen, Ace Pot-Casino bracket, . and Trevor de Oro. •*" 4N.Z. TROTTING GOLD CUP, £450; 4.30 class; 2 miles. 1 Gunfire scr Craßanour .... 12 . Fernbrook Lass scr Smoofer a- : &*!*?..::£ &IS Tl n- 8 v:::: jj Willow Wavo ... Bcr Key Spec 3b. '; Cloudy Range .. 12 I Although the President's Handicap • at Timaru last month was not a truly- " run race, the field Recess beat included some proved stayers, notaDiy ■ "Willow Wave, Peter Locanda, and -Bingen Palm. Eecess won in a-fight- ' ing finish with Little Nelson, and, judg- ■ ing by her previous form, and breeding there is no reason to doubt that • she will be staying on with the strong ■ field carded for the New Zealand TrotMing Gold Cup. Cloudy Eange showed •a return to his best form by winning the Craven Handicap which is one of the hardest sprint races on the trotting - calendar to win. Cloudy Range has - not had much racing over two miles ■ this season, but he was previously a sound stayer, in His class, at least. 1 Willow Wave will have to be taken ' very much on trust. He was a race- ' course certainty beaten on the second : day at Forbury Park, in November, • but since then he has still failed after going away reasonably well. -To say he is ungenuine is only half stating • the case. Gunfire is a 4min 22sec • pacer at his best, and he has been • consistent this season. Fernbrook Lass, who twice defeated Gamble early in the season, has not been able to repeat that form in recent months. - Queen Author has shown glimpses of Iher best form lately. She has not - won a race since last April, when she 'beat Bracken and Bingen Palm on a holding track at Aldington. Craganour did not keep his Dunedin engage- ■ ments. He contested the Midsummer 'Handicap at Aldington and finished ' fourth after losing several lengths at ' the start. In his best form he would beat Sure and Smooger. Gold Tinge finished second to Llewellyn's Pride 'in the Midsummer Handicap, but Rey Spec, who subsequently won the Dun- - edin Cup, should nearly have won that ' race. Rey Spec is now on 36yds. Favourite for the Metropolitan Handicap on the second clay of the Forbury Park Meeting, Rey Spec stood on the mark and took no real part in the race. A keen contest is promised by the strongest field for the class brought together this season. M. B. Edwards ' holds a strong hand with Craganour

ahd Sure, who will be bracketed. However, more support may come for Recess and Cloudy Range.

PROGRESSIVE HANDICAP, £130; unhoppled

trotters; 4.57 class; 2 miles. Don Giovanni . scr Renegade 24 Fairy Brooks .. scr Waikato Prince . 24 Little Reta scr Earl Bingen ... 3G Worthy Star .. 12 Mabel Chimes . 38

Most of the trotters in the Progressive Handicap have been over two miles, but none has shown other than average form, even in winning. Don Giovanni beat Discord and FairyBrooks at Timaru, and may fluke it again. If, however, Waikato Prince is in anything like the same form as that he disclosed last season, he should have little difficulty in accounting for this field of moderates. Renegade is consistent. He has been placed over two miles, but his efforts over a distance do not make him out to be a stayer. ■ Still, it may not take a stayer to win here. Worthy Star has not retained his form for any length of time. When right he can trot fast. Earl Bingen is an honest plodder. He registered 4min 43 3-ssec in defeating Sandy N. at a 72yds advantage at Hawera last season. A repetition of this should get him in the money. There will be support for Waikato Prince, Earl Bingen, and Worthy Star. 4.0 PROBATIONERS' HANDICAP, £100; 3.5 class; 11/*I 1/* miles. Activity '....,.. scr Ideal scr Aide de Camp. . scr Lucky Jack ecr Celebrity ..... scr Monetary scr Chleftainess ... scr Native Son .... scr Coral Prince .. scr Our War scr Diversion ....'. scr St. Helena .... scr Doubt scr Shrewdy scr Dual scr Travisque .... scr Epilogue scr Hermes 38 Golden Miller .. scr Jean Parrlsh .. 36 A quick beginner will be favoured for the Probationers' Handicap, for which all except two of the acceptors are non-winners. Many are unknown quantities. If placed earlier in the day, Our War will probably come in for solid support. He has been in front for more than a mile and a quarter in previous races in Canterbury, and usually begins safely. Celebrity is a quality-looking three-year-old filly who showed early promise. She is trained by C. S. Donald. Dual will be suited by the distance. She is one of.the most seasoned of all novices. The result of the Gracefield Trial Handicap will have some bearing on prospects here. Among those who will attract notice are Our War, Dual, Celebrity. 4.35 DISPATCH HANDICAP, £120; 3.1 class; lVi miles. Brigadier scr All Worthy 12 Fortes scr Lady Ann 12 Happi scr Moana Tama .;'. 12 Prince Roydon . scr Zest 12 ■ Ranfurly Lass . scr Ace Pot 21 Slippery Sam ... scr Aerial Boy .... 24 Waving . Corn .. scr Casino 24 Ahuarelta 12 Orleigh Mills .. 30 Fortex, who left the novice ranks at the Greymouth January Meeting, is a good type of mare likely to go on with it. She has some tried performers to contend with in the Dispatch Handicap, among whom Moana Tama, Ace Pot, Zest, Lady Ann, Ahuareka, and Ranfurly Lass have won races during the past two months. Moana Tama, who was a high-class juvenile, acted badly at Washdyke recently after showing a brilliant return to winning form at Oamaru in the New Year. The others mentioned have not beaten the same class as Moana Tama; nor has Fortex for that matter, but she appeals as a certain improver. Many will rely on Fortex, Moana ..Tama, and Ranfurly Lass. 5.10 KIA ORA HANDICAP, £200; 2.4G class; laA. miles. Chancellor .... scr Recess scr Craganour ~... scr Sylvia Sydney . scr Homeward .... scr Willow Wave .. scr Logan's Pride .. scr Prince Pedro .. 12 Queen Author .. scr Candidates for "the Kia Ora Handicap who are engaged in the Cup are Recess, Willow Wave, Craganour, and Queen. Author. It is possible that Craganour will. be reserved for the later race. Earlier in his career he had extreme brilliance, and it is a pity that unsoundness has repeatedly interfered with his preparation. Recess has built most of her reputation in mile and a quarter events, and she will be- one of the favourites if started a second time. The Chancellor—Homeward bracket may have support, but neither of these pacers has come up to expectations in recent races; Sylvia Sydney has seldom run a poor race, and she is still improving. Willow Wave is referred to in the prospects for the Cup. The only Auckland horse engaged is Prince Pedro, who has a big task to give a start to Recess, Craganour, and Sylvia Sydney.
