BIG CRICKET
M.C.C. v. NEW ZEALAND
MATCH STARTS TOMORROW
HOURS OF PLAY
The indications (are that the match between the M.C.C. and New Zealand teams, to be played at the Basin Reserve commencing tomorrow at 11.30 a.m., will be one of the best cricket attractions staged in Wellington for many a day. There is the prospect of playing conditions being much better than was the case in the opening match of the M.C.C. team's New Zealand tour, when Wellington gained a narrow win in an exciting finish. Careful attention has. been given to the preparation of the special wicket for the match, and the ground, benefiting from recent rains, also bears an excellent appearance. Much of the play by the visitors on the southern section of their tour has been of an exhilarating type, and their fondness for bright cricket is likely to be very evident in the second match with New Zealand, for which the Dominion side has been changed with a view to a better performance than, that given at Dunedin. Three days are allotted for the match, and the hours of play each day are: Before lunch, 11.30 a.m. to 1 pm.; after lunch, 1.45 p.m. to 3.45 p.m.; after tea, 4 p.m. to 6 p.m. The charge for admission to the ground is Is, and for the enclosure and stand Is 3d extra. . ~**,. By way of final preparation for the match the players -practised at the Basin Reserve this afternoon. All members of the New Zealand team were here today, and Mr. D. L. Ryan (who is one of the umpires) also arrived. THE TEAMS. It was announced today that R. Morgan, of Wellington, had been appointed to act as twelfth man for the New Zealand team. The following are the teams:— ENGLAND. ■ E. R. T. Holmes (Surrey), captain. D. Smith (Derbyshire). J. H. Parks (Sussex). W. Barber (Yorkshire). J. Hardstaff (Nottinghamshire). J. H. Human (Middlesex). J. Langridge (Sussex). J. M. Sims (Middlesex). S. C. Griffith" (Cambridge University). H. D. Read (Essex). A. D. Baxter (Middlesex). In the event of E. R. T. Holmes not being able to play through the injury to his hand, received when he endeavoured to take a hot catch in the slips at Dunedin, it is expected that the Hon. C. J. Lyttelton will lead the side. N. S. Michell-Innes was twelfth man in the Dunedin match with . New Zealand, and he, no doubt, will be again in that position. NEW ZEALAND. I. B. Cromb (Canterbury), captain. J. L. Kerr (Canterbury). G. L. Weir (Auckland). D. A. R. Moloney (Wellington). H. G. Vivian (Auckland). M. Wallace (Auckland). J. R. Lamason (Wellington). A. W. Roberts (Canterbury). J. A. R. Blandford (Wellington). C.'Elmes (Otago)., E. D. Blundell (Wellington). R. Morgan (Wellington), twelfth man. One of the difficulties facing the New Zealand captain is in deciding upon New Zealand's opening pair, and it is not unlikely that Cromb will overcome it by .going in himself with Kerr,. leaving Weir to occupy.his, usual post as first-wicket batsman. The batting order is likely to be much the same as the order in which the players are listed above. In batting strength the team appears to be a good deal stronger than at Dunedin, and from the bowling, which, could ■ still: be stronger, the visitors should find runs not so easily gained as in the first match with New Zealand. There are also hopes of an improved performance in the field. The umpires will be Messrs. D. L. Ryan (Auckland) and C. Moore (Wellington). . ■ .
