A correspondent writes with reference to an article giving Thomas Arnold's recollections of Tawa Flat in the early days. "It might' interest your readers to know that Thomas Arnold (whose older brother was Matthew Arnold poet, critic, and educationist) became an inspector of schools in Tasmania 'in 1850. Later he became an associate of Cardinal Newman was appointed Professor of English Literature Fn the Roman Catholic University, Dublin 1856; classical master m Birmingham Oratory School, 1862; Professor of English Literature at University ColleK Dublin, in 1882. He was he father of Mrs. Humphrey Ward, the noveUst. His brother Matthew became private secretary to Lord LansLwne in the year that Thomas came to New Zealand. Matthew also became an inspector of schools (in England) in 1851, and on three occasions drew i U p valuable reports on Continental sys■tems of education. "Descendants of the Mr. Barrow with whom Thomas Arnold obtained board and lodgings are. still. living. A Miss Barrow married a-Mr. Mexted.'uncle of the head of the Mexted family, who is still at Tawa Flat, and her grandchildren are still living.'!
