"WINTER MONTHS' BONUS"
Strong criticism is expressed by "A Business Man" of the announcement by the Minister cf Employment that the recent additions of 2s and 3s a week to relief pay would be converted into a "winter months' bonus." The board, the correspondent states, has previously reduced allowances on the plea that this was necsssary to enable the board to pay "increased winter allocations," but it has never hitherto carried out this policy. Now; because the men justly objected to extra hours for the additional pay, the board has made the increase a "winter1 months' bonus' — presumably to be deducted when the board decides that winter has ended. Th°n the unemployed and their families will revert to the former allowances, though their need for food will be. rUst as great. The correspondent concludes by urging that there should be a full investigation by an independent tribunal into all unemployment expenditure, so that it may be known why increased relief cannot be given.
