EXPANDING INDUSTRY

In the course of a lengthy letter reviewing industrial opportunities "Landmark" submits that there is great scope for expansion if initiative is shown. He recalls the opinion expressed by. Lord Bledisloe that New Zealand had not the right type of cattle for a beef export trade. "Experts closely interest|ed in the cloth and woollen industry : stress the fact that wool growers must organise by advertising, and bring before the buying public the serious draw- • backs of artificial wool. Reading the (many letters from the, actual consumers of our butter for household use [the opinions are most conflicting. Some say it is the finest'on the market but they cannot be sure of getting it twice in succession. Others say it is not inferior and is only to be seen in the background of the large stores and sold as colonial blend. These conflicting opinions- should be investigated and the butter followed tc the consumer. We have within reach, alternatives-that could be' profitably exploited against the present preponderance of dairy products. There is a'Strong possibility that miles of country surrounding Wellington could very profitably be adopted for afforestation that is unprofitably used for farming purposes. At the present time there are 130 different I kinds of gum trees in New Zealand. Take one of them as an example. In 25 to 30 years it reaches maturity and is then worth £7 or £8; It grows best about 200 ft above sea level, when used in this ground lasts 40 years, and can be obtained in great lengths. (E. Engenisedes.)" ,
