KEAS
Mr. J. Hodgson, late inspector o£ the New Zealand Railways, 77 Penrose Street, Lower Hutt, writes stating that in company with a witness (name and address given)—he pig-hunted annually for many years in the back-country runs, North Canterbury, and- saw dozens of sheep dying of wounds inflicted over the kidney fat. The sheep were in cases well fed. He shot a kea which, on examination, was found to have a piece of sheep's kidney fat partly out of its throat and beak. He gives no evidence of having seen a kea operating on a sheep's back.
We have condensed this letter and also.a letter by Captain E. V. Sanderson, who replies to the complaints of sheep losses (attributed to keas) by stating that the keas were there when the sheep-runs were, taken up, and that runholders have no right to public money (Government or local body bounties) in any war against keas waged in their personal interests.
