TURF NEWS IN BRIEF

Acceptances for the Manawalu Meeting next Saturday are due at 8 o'clock this evening.

The Wellington owner Mr, W. Higgins is now on his way back to the Dominion from England, and later on he may go over to Sydney to see his horses (Debham, Fulojoy, and Cricket) run at the A.J.C. Spring Meeting. C. Boyle has brought into work at Awapuni a rising two-year-old chestnut colt by Hunting Song from Tino Atua, thus a full-brother to Hunter's Moon, who three years ago was purchased by the Ceylon owner, Mr. G. L. Lyon. Private advice has been received in Auckland from Melbourne that L. Dulieu will arrive back in the Dominion on August 5. This will enable him to fulfil riding engagements at the Grand National Meeting.

Gisborne Jack, who will be having his first race in the Riddiford Steeples at Marton tomorrow, is a six-year-old bay gelding by Birkdale, and he Will be Mr. K. McK. Duncan's representative and mount. Mr. Duncan was successful last year with Cardhu, whom he also bought a short time previously. ' . . ■

Old Remus, who will make his race debut in the opening steeples at Marton tomorrow, is a five-year-old bay gelding by Nigger Minstrel from Front Line, and he is owned by Mr. C. L. Bull, whose colours H.R.H. the Duke of Gloucester carried on Black Man at Marton last New Year's Day. According to a Te Aroha report, Mr. E. Mayo's Musketoon gelding Mustang has been leased to a Taranaki sportsman, and he will be trained in future at New Plymouth. Since -C. E. Mallowes's lease of the gelding expired, about two months ago, he has been kept in nice condition to go right into work.

Although Gay Egypt did not strike his top_ form during the present season there is reason to expect that in- the coming term he will make up for lost time (says a Te Aroha report). He is looking well just now, and will be ready to race at the early spring fixtures.

Glenleven, who won the Riddiford Steeples at the Rangitikei Hunt two years ago through the disqualification of two other horses who finished well ahead of him, has not raced since, but he will be attempting to win the same race again tomorrow. He is a son of Guianforte now rising fourteen years, and he is owned by Mr. P. W. Briant, who rode him two years ago. The three-year-old Enlightenment is showing improved condition and is infusing more dash into his ;work, says an Auckland writer. Enlightenment is a half-brother by Delightment to Black Marlin and a member, of R. S. Bagby's team." Black Marlin- is making progress towards recovery from the injury that put him out of action recently. ' - ■

The rising three-year-old Tidalia, by Tidal from Queen March, lacks size, but. she has grown and lengthened since completing her spell, and is thriving on useful tasks. She may always be small, and in this respect she will take after her half-sister, Gay Marigold. Tidalia has shown no form yet, but she may run on fairly well as she matures. • ■ :

' A member of Mr. R. B. Hines's team at Te Aroha that is likely to attract attention when his track work begins in earnest 4s the Paladin—Capable gelding Fei-Mah. Before going, to Te Aroha West he underwent a preliminary education, so it should not be long before a line can be gained as to his galloping ability. -. It is seldom that Mr. Hines races any but those of his own breeding, so more interest will be taken in Fei-Mah on this* account.
