TEN MILLIONS

MONEY FOR RELIEF

COUNCILLOR'S PREDICTION

That the Government would provide £10,000,000 for the unemployed before the end of July was a statement by Mr. W. W. Scarff (Heathcote County Council) at a conference of local bodies held to discuss means of providing work for the unemployed. Mr. Scarff said that he had been advised to that effect by a member of Parliament, states the "Christchurch Times."

Interviewed after the conference, Mr. Scarff said that his Information

was that before the end of July £10,000,000 would be floating in New Zealand, and would be made available for the unemployed. Of that amount, £4,000,000 would come from the Unemployment Board, £4,000,000 from a Government loan to be raised, and £2,000,000 from'the Government, which had it "up its sleeve." Just before leaving for England, said Mr. Scarff, Mr. Coates had stated that he was £1,000,000 better off than formerly. Had he made that statement a week before leaving, he would have been besieged with requests from many quarters for the restoration of wage cuts and for reductions in taxation. Mr. Scarf! believed that, as soon as Mr. Coates came back many of the taxes and wage cuts would be removed, and the Coalition Government would be returned stronger than ever after the elections in November.
