RELIEF WORKS PAY
CITIZENS' PROTEST

ASHBURTON, May 31.
An agitation against the low scale of allocations granted to relief workers, which has been growing for some time, culminated this afternoon in an openair public meeting of protest which was attended by a large number of citizens of all classes. The Mayor presided.
The following motion by the Rev. R. S. Watson and seconded by Mr. .J. Shaw, a member of the borough council, was carried:—"That this representative public meeting of Ashburton citizens emphatically protests against the present allocations granted local relief workers, and asks that at least the scale in vogue in the main centres be instituted at Ashburton forthwith."
The following motion, moved by the Mayor .of Christchurch (Mr. D. G. Sullivan), was also carried:—"This meeting of Ashburton citizens further urges oh the Government and the Unemployment Board the necessity of immediately increasing the wages and sustenance payments of the unemployed by 10s a week, to be followed by the introduction of public works at standard rates of pay."
