CEUELTY BY CHINESE
S.P.C.A. ' PROSECUTION

AUCKLAND, May--8. ■', Prosecuted by Inspector/ Hollisgsworth, of the Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals, oh two charges, a Chinese named JLeslie' Sue Nack pleaded guilty iii the 1 Magistrate's Court. He was charged on April-9 with taking two absolutely protected birds, two red-billed gulls (turapunga1), and also with cruelly ill-treating the birds by plucking their tails and ,wing feathers and tying the gulls by their legs to a stake. . :
Inspector Hollingsworth said, that when he i took" possession of the trwro gulls they were dead. The defendant admitted having tied them to the stake. Witness said that in pluckhtg th birds portion of the flesh had-been torn away.
Mr. G. Wallace, on behalf "of "Sue Nack, said that seagulls had been doing extensive damage to his market gardens and they were also a source of trouble to gardeners. > ' ;
The Magistrate said that x the < defendant was liable to a fine "of .-£25 on one of the charges. "I find its hard to have any sympathy for you at'\all,? he said, in fining defendants £2 on each charge, plus costs £1 7s. v ■
