EXHIBITS AT SHOW

MANUFACTURERS' SIDE

"The letter by 'Curious' has hit the! nail on the head in suggesting that one reason for the lack of displays by Wellington manufacturers is dissatisfaction with the manner in which the show is at present run by the Wellington Show Association, and with the wide discrepancy in exhibiting costs to New Zealand manufacturers as compared with those charged to importers," said a Wellington manufacturer employing a large staff today.

Illustrating his point, the speaker stated that in this year's show the space fees demanded from manufacturers in the general section ranged from 3s in the best locations to Is 6d in the more remote parts of the building, and on top of paying these fees manufacturers had to erect their own stands, while in the' Empire courts importers were given1 space at fees ranging jalso from 3s down to as low as Is 6d, but had no stands to build, these having been erected for them by and at the expense of the Show Association. "In other words," he said, "local manufacturers were asked, taking the average cost of a stand into consideration, to pay just about double the rental per square foot paid by importers. Is it any wonder," he concluded, "that local manufacturers refuse to have anything to do with the Wellington Show as at present conducted?"
