COMPETITIONS.

An innovation of particular interest 't*j the junior grades was put forward by Mr. F. McCrone in a motion that championship contests be held for both B and C grade* on similar lines to the champion-of-cham' pions contest for senior players. This motion was very favourably received and it was agreed that immediate steps be taken to circulate it to affiliated clubs with a view to the matter being considered at an early meeting of the leajjße. The question whether the B grade tournament vai to be split up into sections was also raised, but as there was-no definite-information indicating how many teams would be "competing, it was decided to divide the competition if more than ten entries were received. It was generally agreed, however, that sectional play in any grade..w.a« far from satisfactory and there was a-gen-eral feeling that as the league is expanding year by year some scheme whereby ihe grades would be kept in a comparatively equal numerical strength and embodying the principle of promotion and relegation was needed. More will be hearfLsUt this later. ' V V) . The game has been making good 'headway in the local colleges, and an application for affiliation had been received from the Wellington Technical College. The college was unanimously elected to membership and proposes to enter a team in .the C grade competition during the coming season. ■ . '->■- '

Thanks were tendered to the Press for their chess reports during the year and appreciation was expressed of the valuable assistance rendered to the league by Mr. Gilkison in connection with the drawing up of the revised rules governing the competitions. ' .. -■;,:;•
