SURF CHAMPIONSHIPS

CONTESTS AT , PAEKAKARIKI

I Arrangements for tho Wellington 1 Surf championships, to bo held at Paekakariki Beach next Sunday, were completed at a recent meeting of the Wel-lington-District Surf Association. Entries have been received from the Maranui,' Lyall Bay,,lsland Bay, Worser Bav" Eastbourne, and Paekakanki Clubs. It was decided to commence | tho championships at 11 a.m., with the 'Law Bose Bowl competition, to be ±01- --, lowed by: a teams surf face. At 2.15 'pm. the-march past championship for i the Kennedy .Marching Cup is to take place/ and at 3 p.m. the Sanderson Memorial Cup competition will be commenced. Mora than usual interest should be shown this year in the various events in view of the proximity of the New Zealand swimming championships at Auckland on February 17, and the. New Zealand surf championships at New Plymouth on February 23 and 24 No doubt the various clubs will take advantage of the Paekakariki compqtitions to gauge their chances in the national,events, and very keen contests should be seen. • The Railway Department 'is making arrangements for the teams to travel by the 9 a.m. train from Thorndon on Sunday. The ■judges for the competitiona will be Messrs.' W. H. Gcrrie, 11. D. Dickson, and P. Edwards. Mr. V. Allen will again act as referee, and Mr. N. A. Ingram as marshal The timekeepers will be Messrs. Foley, Roberts, Wilton, and Dadson. , Tentative arrangements for- a gala day on the'Petone Beach on Sunday, March 10, on tho occasion of the official visit to Wellington of Mr. F. G. Fishendon, vice-president of the Royal Life-saving Society's central executive in London; were also discussed at the meeting. , It is hoped to secure the co-operation of the Petone and Lower Hutt Swimming and Life-saving Clubs, the Petone Rowing Club, and tho Petono Band.
