SANITARY INSTITUTE
PUBLIC MEETING HELD
The first public meeting of ;the New Zealand branch of the, Royal Sanitary Institute was held in the Concert Chamber 'of tho Town Hall last ■ evening, when delegates attending the annual conferenco were welcomed by the Mayor (Mr. T.. C. A. Hislop). The president of the branch (Dr. IM. H. Watt, Director-General of Health) presided. An apology for absence .was read from the.Minister of Health <Sir Alex^ ander Young). Mr. Hislop "expressed gratification at the amalgamation of the New Zealand Sanitary Inspectors' Association andthe branch of tho' institute, and emphasised that much could bo achieved by the new body. The average person thought of sanitation in terms of drains, but the whole scope of tho movement was much wider, tha.n that: it embzaccd'the question of • healthy surroundings. The members of the branch had the opportunity of developing an immense field, and he"'feli that in tho public interest they would develop sanitation in the widest sense of the word. Mr. R. Day (New Plymouth) president of the New Zealand Sanitary Inspectors' Association, said that everyone was anxious that much good should be achieved as a result of the amalgamation.-^, ■ ■ „ . Mr. A. Scholcfield (Mayor of Petone) said that sanitation work had evolved from a question of drainage till.it had been-nlaced on a scientific basis. An "address was delivered on A Wider Outlook on the Subject of Sanitation," by Lieutenant-Colonel F. wW Dawson, a medical officer of- health, Christchurch, and was followed by a discussion.
