AUCKLAND,.January 29,
A suspected caso of smallpox, the patient being an Auckland resident who returned by tho Aorangi on January 20 from a trip abroad, has been detected by Dr. T. J. Hughes, medical oiiicer of health in Auckland. The patient, who has been receiving medical attention .for another coinplaint since, his return, was noticed on Monday" to have developed a slight rash. Dr. Hughes was advised, and today ordered tho removal •of the patient to the Auckland Hospital, where ho has' been isolated, for observa-. tion.
"It is too early to say whether or riot the cast is smallpox," Dr. Hughes said. "We have not yet diagnosed tho case. A specialist has expressed the opinion that it is not, smallpox." The patient was the only one of the Aorangi's Auckland passengers yet traced who was showing any symptoms, Dr. Hughes added. During the trip to New Zealand he was suffering from another complaint, and on arrival at Auckland ho went to his home and remained there as far as was known. There was no satisfactory accommodation at the patient's homo for isolation, however, and so he had been removed to hospital. Tho rash developed by the patient was considered suspicious.'
