NEW BRIGHTON TROTS

. WIN FOR WILLIAM TELL

HUTT PARK FORM GUIDE

(Special to the "Evenlna Post.") CHRISTCHUHCII, September I. r The New Brighton Trotting Club'e First Spring Meeting was held today in fine but cold weather. The track wae in good order, though a tnffe elovv, and large fields provided some interesting eport. Tho a'ttendauoQ wae satisfactory, but a decline of £2249 10s was registered in turnover, today's figures being £14i182 10s, as against £10,432 twelve month*) ago. BIG TROTTING FIELD. The Improvers' Handicap, the opening event, attracted twenty-two unhoppled trotters. Keal Gift was soon in iront but broke after two furlongs, Princess Onyx going on from Parette, Renegade, and Gay Crusader, .with Header and Silver Sou moving up. Princess Onyx was going we'll in the lead when she broke, at the entrance to the 'straight, Parette tangling a little earlier. Renegade was then left in front but Header wore him down, winning by a neck. Sonoma King finished strongly to beat Silver Sea for third. The winner and third arc good Sonoma Harvester trotters. Princess Onyx, only a three-year-old, looks like being high class in time. NEVER, HEADED. Rowai was smartest out in the Belfast Handicap and was never headed. Handicapper, Midshipmaicl, and Paragon followed him early, and Starvale, Full Hand, Gay Sister, and 'Shoelace were handy after half a mile. Sky Wink joined in'at the home turn. Handicapper dropped out when the straight was reached, Rewai going on to beat Midshipmaid comfortably by a length. Ironside came -with a lato rush to cut Sky Wink out of third place. The winner is by the imported horse Silk Thread, and he is a smart pacer, though not likely to'reach good class. Ironside ran into a lot of bad luck in the early stages. Moana Tama did not come on as was expected, after being fairly well placed, but he will improve on this soon. ■ : •' . ",.-.■;■-.■■ LIKE A GOOD HORSE. William Tell won the Burwood Handicap like a'good horse. Smoke Screen and Grand Finale- set the early piicey Gun> metal, Golden Direct, Matchmaker, William Toll, and Worthy King being handy. Worthy King broke after going a little over a mile,' and half a mile from home Golden Direct and -William Tell were in charge, Smoke Screen, Jolly Wave, and Rey Spec following them to the straight. William Tell then, cleared out, winning as he liked by two lengths from Golden Direct, and a length away Rey Spec just beat Jolly Wave. The winner, by Pour Chimes, is a much-improved horse who will do further service for J. Bryce's stable this, season, "■,. Grand Finale, beaten it long way from'home,-' pulls too hard to impress as a two-mil.er. ,;: : ' AN EASY VICTORY. Lone Derby' ■'was '. first -to show out in the Seaview.Handicap and soon had Garry Thorpe, Blandford, Eddystone, Golden Cross, and Ezywurk in Uot pursuit. Ezywurk took second place;.along the back, and half a mile from home Colene Parrish moved up fast but broke. Lone.Derby1 led to the straight and won easily from Colene Parrish. who finished with a rush. heating Ezywurk by half a length. Blandford looked certain to be second till he broke lefcfl than a furlong from the post, after which he got going again, just missing third place. Young Travis was not far away and he may be seen to better advantage in liifi next start, as this race should •.linrpen him up. • UNLUCKY DEFEAT. Tho Dash Handicap saw Betty Wrack beaten very unluckily. Guyziah, Great Antrim, and Great Thought set the pace, with Little Victor and Betty Wrack heading tho others Half a mile from home Captain Wrack, Moreilo, and Agile moved up. Great Thought took chat-Re a furlong further on nnfl tol to the straight, where Betty Wrack was trying to find an opening. Oucr? she- prot rlmr she camo with fi '-.wit run but, Groat Thought' stalled her nff by a head. Agile wa- four lenettv •uvav. with Morello and Guvziah close up j Tlir> winner i> a tirii'iant pacer but not reliable. Betty Wrack would have won liarl she got out from the bunch a little earlier. : SOLID WRACK PACER. 'Germanieiw was first out in the Spring ( Hnnnieap. ReM. Boy - hearted him after two furlongs, but broko' in the straight.

Norman Fox going on ft-ora. Gennanious, Ruin, Amonoß, and Honeymoon. Three furlongs from home Norman Fox wae followed by Ruin nnd Ainonos, with Gcrmanicus and Honeymoon handy. Ruin took cliargo in tho straight, where Norman Fox broke, Ruin staying on to beat Gernianicus easily by half a length. Honeymoon was three lengths away, with Ainonos fourth, then Sea Gift, who should improve before long. Ruin is another of the solid Wrack pacers. ' • PLENTY OF INCIDENTS. There were plenty of incidents in the Waiuoni Handicap. The firetjcame when Chef broke down and fell in his preliminary. Worthy King soon took the lead, but Coldwood headed him after half a mile, Pronto Bingen and Worthy Queen being handy. A furlong further on Worthy King broke, interfering with half the field. Tempest was one who missed the trouble and he was not far behind Coldwood, Morning Sun, Worthy Queen,"and Pronto Bingen at the home turn. Tempest shot out in the straight, winning easily from Pronto Binpten. A length awny <; Jolly Wave stalled off Cloudy Range, who came with a'late rush. Tempest is! very well and ho will win asain soon; After breaking down Chef hobbled back to the birdcage with difficulty. He was scratched. and his backers sot their money back. "' ELVO COMFORTABLY, Smoke 'Screen began very -fast, in • the Electric Handicap, Priceless and Elvo following him to the back, where' Cantain Wrack fan to the front, with Betty Wrack hnmly Three furlongs from honfe Captain Wrack was showing the wav to Elvo, with Betty Wrack. Smoke Screen, and Ayr Lass next. Captain Wrnck was clone with when the straight was reached Elvn then ■ took charze and stalled off ■Rettv Wrack comfortably by a lenstb. Smoke Screen.was four lengths away, with Ayr Lass close up. Elvo is a sneprly mare who has been racing very, well for some time, and she i« not f>* the end of her improvement.
