UMPIRES' ASSOCIATION

"We earnestly appeal to all members of our association to try and increase the membership by asking ex-cricketers to join our ranks," states the annual report of the Wellington Cricket Umpires' Association. "The need is especially great in the junior grades. If ex-cricketers could only realise that they can see and enjoy the game far better when acting as an umpire than sitting on the bank as a looker-on, they would join our ranks and so help the grand old game along." Members are thanked for their co-operation in carrying out the objects of the association, and the committee are thanked for their help in enabling this to be carried into effect.

The report states that the members kept their appointments very well last season, the club appreciating their services highly. The system by which the Wellington Cricket Association had a representative (Mr. Wiren) on the appointment committee was a success in every respect. Mr. Steele again represented the umpires on the W.C.A. management committee. "There seems to be a feeling," the report adds, "that the holding of meetings once a month is not very satisfactory, and that we should revert back to fortnightly meetings. Members will be given an opportunity to discuss this at the annual meeting. On several occasions members of our association attended meetings of the Mercantile Cricket League Umpires' Association and members of that association attended meetings of our association, expressing a desire to work in close cooperation with us in all matters affecting the . game of cricket. With this object we are in hearty agreement, and trust that the friendly spirit created will continue to expand."
