WELLINGTON CLUB
In the annual report of the Wellington Cricket Club it ie recorded that a gratifying feature of the 1933-1934 6eaaon was the increase in the number of teams to four. The committee is particularly anxious to increase the number of the younger players who may be expected to carry on the activities of the club with success in the future. With this end in view an urgent appeal is made to all members to find recruits to bring the playing sides up to five. The committee had to observe great caution in administering the club's affairs, as, with still a small membership, it was found difficult to keep the club's expenditure t within reasonable distance of its income. In fact, had it not been for the donations of some keen supporters of-the club, there would have been no caeh balance with which to commencel the coming season. The senior team finished second in the championship to Kilbirnie. The real strength of the team rested in the bowlers, and the winning of three games outright must be attributed largely to them. A glance at the averages will prove the value of Blundell and Symes to the side, and also the useful assistance of *oley, Morgan, Caldwell, and Cousins. Ell, in his first full season in senior cricket, batted most attractively, not only in club matches, but also in the Plunket Shield games. R. A. Whyte captained the team, and once again proved a; very consistent bat. In judging the batting of the team by the averages, it must be borne in mind that many of the men halfway down the batting list had to sacrifice their wickets by forcing the pace in search of outright wine. Centuries were «oied bJ Hollings (1H) v. Institute, and Ell (100), v. Old Boys. The ground fielding was good, but the catching at times was not reliable. E. A. Whyte kept wickets excelleThe" performances of the other teams are also referred to in the report, the second grade team filling Second place in the "iminninnshiP. ■
