"THE MORDIALLOC WIZARD"
In 1924 the Williamstown Racing Club established a weight-for-age event at its August Meeting. It was first known as the Williamstown Stakes, and was run under that natna for two years, in both of which it was won by the Woorak horse Whittier, trained by the late H. McCalman for Mr. Ben Chaffey. In 1026 the name was changed to Underwood Stakes to "perpetuate the name of the late Mr. H. Underwood, 'a valued, chairman of the olub. • . '
A remarkable feature of the Underwood Stakes contests that have so far been held is that "the Mordialloc Wizard," J. Holt, has saddled up sis of the nine winners. He won the first Underwood Stakes with Heroic in 1926. and since then he has scored with Highland (twice), Royal Charter, and Heroic's son Hall Mark f twice) Hall Mark has won the last two years, and his early winning form this season enhances the interest in what gives every promise of being a truly notable spring campaign in Australia.
■At the Moonee Valley Meeting early this month the second division of the Tally Ho Handicap, six furlongs, was won by Hugo, ft fouj-year-old half-brother by Nigger Minstrel to Playground. Hugo won a race in Melbourne last January, hut his subsequent form was disappointing and he changed stables. This was his second start after a spell, and he won easily ;il a good price.
