LANDLUBBER'S CHANCE

LUCESS ALSO FAVOURED

(Special from "Early Bird.")

AUCKLAND, This Day

Not a gi'eat number of Auckland horses will be engaged this week at the Taranaki and Egmont-Wanganui Hunt Clubs' Combined Meeting, but nevertheless one or two wins for northern owners would not surprise. In all there are only five from northern stables in tomorrow's events. The. most likely one from the north to pay for the trip is the hack Landlubber, whose mission includes races this week at New Plymouth, at Marton next week, and then at Wanganui, but as to whether this routine will be carried through to the end depends upon the form he, shows early. ,

After a long spell Landlubber had a. race at the Pakuranga. Hunt Club's Meeting at Ellerslie, and he led to the home turn. This was a very satisfactory effort after taking into consideration that he had a little-known horseman up. Landlubber has won a few races with the greatest ease in heavy ground in the past,, and, handled,to the best advantage this week, he may add to his record.

Also figuring in the same race as Landlubber (the hack seven furlongs) is Lady Zinnia, and she claims a later engagement in the hack sprint at the close of the day, This mare won a double at Rotorua thirteen months ago, and has done little in the interim. However, she was produced again at. thermal headquarters, her two efforts seeing her ' finish third to Foreign Money and Tuaheahe, the former having won earlier in the day.' Tnaheahe, too, represents fair north hack form, so that Lady Zinnia may make a showing in her Taranaki outings. It is possible that she will.fulfil both her engagements. The class for the Egmont-Wanganui Hunt Cup is far above the average, and for this reason it will be a hard race to win. Lucess, • the only Aucklander engaged, heads the weights, and when ono reviews his form at the Grand National Meeting of.last year it will bo conceded that he is not overweighted. He contested the three open cross-country events then, winning one and being placed in the other two. Since then he has done nothing of note, but his last effort as a 'chaser, at Pukekoke last month, was good enough to give him his chance here, provided that the obstacles are not too flimsy. Flower Bag impressed at Ellerslie and Don Ermai at Wanganui, and this is the pair that Lucess may have to beat at the finish— and he may just do it. ;

Flying Brince and Prolyxo, the two Auckland hopes for the sprint, have been very disappointing over- the past twelve months. The former has not raced for some time, and so he will have to prove first that he is back to his old form before being recommended. As for Prolyxo, it is known that she is not a good winter track performer. This probably accounts for her very-complete.failures recently, and for this reason one could hardly suggest that she may get a place in the Taranaki: events tomorrow and on Saturday; The j .extra furlong oh Saturday will doubtless; 'suit'her better. . \
