WOMEN'S INSTITUTE
MEETING AT TRENTHAM
The Women's. Institute movement grows iipaco in tho Hutt Valley, as it does everywhere else. Tho early part of tho present month saw tho formation of one at Ttiita, and yesterday another camo into being, this lime at Trentham.
Tho inaugural meeting of the Trentham Institute was held, at Howell's Hall, when Mrs. Anderson presided over a representative attendance from tho district, and introduced Mrs. WhiteScott, voluntary organiser, and Mrs. Gibson Young, a member of tho federation executive, both of whom were presented with posies of spring flowers.
Mrs. White-Scott opened proceedings by reading tho institute aspirations, citing them as tho foundation on which women's institutes are based. She briefly traced the history of tho movement, and explained its aims and objects, giving valuable advico as to planning tho work dono, so that as many members as possible should have a definite part in it. She spoke of the need for tho development of tho institute spirit, as expressed in tho mottoes, "Each for all and all for each" and "If you know a good thing, pass it on." She emphasised that tho movement is strictly non-sectarian and nonparty political, although members are encouraged to take a practical interest in the matters which, affect tho welfare of their district.
On the motion of Mrs. Anderson, it was unanimously decided to form a Trontham Institute, and the following officers wero appointed:—Mrs. Anderson, president; Mrs. Ticrney, secretary; Miss Williamson, treasurer; -with a committee consisting of Mesdames Carr, Chapman Taylor, jun., Hugho3, Stewart, King, Beddow, and Calder. The third Tuesday in the month was chosen as meeting clay.
Mrs. Gibson Young spoke briefly on the duties of officers and committee, after which a dainty afternoon tea was served.
