WAIRARAPA LAKE

OUTLET AND LEVELS

SOME VALUABLE DATA

(Special to the ' Evening Post.")

MASTERTON, This Day

Valuable data relating to the levels of Wairarapa Lake have been taken by Mr. J. Came Bidwill at Mangatiti. This shows that the outlet, of tho Lower Lake can be successfully opened when the Upper Lake is at a comparatively low level. On July 29, for instance, tho outlet becaino closod with the lake 'ovel (normal indicated by 100 on the gauge)'at-101:35, while an opening was effected on August i with tho level at 101.9. ,'•'■■

•Tho diversion of. tho Turanganui River from its former courso into tho Narrows direct into the Lower Lake has greatly relieved the flood danger, as this river formerly flooded long before others flowing into the lake basin and deposited large quantities of shingle and debris into the narrow outlet between Wairarapa Lake and Orioko Lake, thus causing a serious blockage in the outflow of Wairarapa Lake. Tho completion of this work is an important link in the genera] scheme of flood control. ~ Negotiations are now proceeding with a view: to straightening the course of the Euamahanga Biver in its lower reaches. Details of the lake:levels at the time the outlet closed and at its reopening, in the period- since August, 1932, as recorded by Mr. Bidwill arc:— Date closed. Dato opened. .
