VISIT TO SHEFFIELD

The Duchess of York wont to Sheffield alone yesterday to carry cat a two-days' programme of engagements arranged for hor and the Dukp of York, who had been forced to remain in London with a poisoned hand. Her* Royal Highness fulfilled a number of public engagements, including tho opening of the new £140,000 public library and art gallery. Handing the Duchess the gold penknifo, tho Lord Mayor said: "Thero is an old superstition, especially here in Sheffield, that anyone who is given a knife must give a small coin in return. I was going to remind the Duke of York of this and ask him to placate tho Pates if lie had been here." The Duchess turned to hor lady-in-waiting and smilingly handed the Lord Mayor a halfpenny.
