ST. MARY'S HOMES
BENEFIT ENTERTAINMENT
A most enjoyable entertainment was held in the Concert Chamber of the Town Hall on Saturday night in aia of St. Mary's Children's Homes. A'delightful programme of three one-act plays, interspersed with part songs by the St. Mary's Choir and solos by Mrs. I. Robertson, was presented to a crowded and enthusiastic audience.
"The Man in the Street," by L. Parker, which opened proceedings, had for its setting a London artist's studio. Mr. Redmond Phillips played the part of the artist, Miss Betty Sladden his wife, and Mr. H. A. Painter the "Man in the Street," a real Cockney character admirably portrayed, who- it transpired was the artist's father-in-law. "Mr. Sampson," by Lea, was a tale of two quaint old maiden ladies and their lodger, and had an air of Mrs. Gaskell about it. Mrs. Craig Mackenzie, Miss Kathleen Smith, and Mr. George Cooper were the players. The last play, '"Feed the Brute," by George Paston, was a most ainusiifg one. The scene was a workman's flat in South Kensington, London, where a worthy wife and her rather flighty neighbour were gbssiping over a Cup of tea: Mrs. Kathleen Smith was the neighbour, and Miss Phyllis Nicholls the wife. With the advent of the workman (Mr. :F, G. Hayes), gossiping camo to an abrupt end, and "feeding the brute" was the order of the day.
The St. Mary's Choir sang very delightfully, with Mrs. Ginn, who trained them, as accompanist, and Mrs. I. Robertson's songs were very much appreciated. Incidental music was provided by Miss Nora- Gray and Miss Hope Flaws, and Mr. Jasper Baldwin was stage manager. ' ' ' -. .Among the audience were.Sir'Michael and Lady. Myers, the Mayor, Mr. T. C. A. Hislop, and Mrs. Hislop, the Hon. J. G. Coates and Mrs. Coatcs, Mrs. Sprott, Mrs. Coleridge, Miss Butts, Mrs. Bristow, Miss E. Bristow, Mr. and Mrs. D. C. Peacock, Mrs. F.
