SUGGESTED NOMINEES
As a result of the decision of the recent conference,' the New Zealand Swimming 'i Council is-now considering the question' of nominations of-.swiniiners [for' inelusion-in the team■ for,ihe British Empire Games, and with-that end in: view has ■ communicated wjtlvj the various . centres respecting guarantees for the estimated expenses of two repre-sentatives.-The two suggested: nominees are N. Crump and.'W.:Whareaitu, and in view of their, performances -during ..the season,. their nomination, should receiveevery support. ■ The. amount, .asked for is. approximately £75 ,, per . man. :.. and while there will possibly,be. some clifi ficulty in raising the. quotas required from each centre, .those; districts in the vicinity of the domicile of the.nominees should be able to provide sufficient funds to enable the requirements of the council to be met. The Overseas.Fund of the council is : in. funds at present, but in view of the fact.. that all swimmers and supporters strongly favour the proposal to invite Otapanese swimmers to tour this country, the. council ;is wisely preserving. this .fund in order to assist in financing such a tour if it can; be arranged. .This is probably .the reason why the council isasking.centres to endeavour to meet, the suggested expenditure of-their nominees for the Empire Games, .and its viewpoint, is 'one that! should be: supported, • , >.:Mueh. has .been said and. .written respecting the qualifications of, Crump and Whareaitu,; and their,;perf,ormances. are so-well known as_not .to require further elaboration;at. the; moment.., Iti'can be said, however, that the record of the former; over ilOO ; metres, in which, he put.lip time, equal.to-tne.best of any likely .opponents,, and, the.-, dashing manner .in which the. latter ;so 'comfortably won*;tho ■ recent,:national!title! arid his,prospects of r going close to 'world's record figures in the, future, -are. performances, that merit recognition, and their proposed, nomination, will' iineet favour throughout the Dominion.
