EVANS BAY

The Wairere II made a fine picture as she led the fleet home, in .the race for the Bucholz Cup in Evans Bay last Saturday. Her new sails are working into first.Tclass.shape, and her owner is to be congratulated on her performance and also on his very popular win in the race which, now bears his name. The Kio 11, also with, comparatively new sails, which are a credit to tho makers, gavo a good performance in the race for the Akarana Yacht Club's Trophy but could not quite give away the required handicaps. This race was marred somewhat by a number of fouls, I but otherwise proved a most interesting contest; the Southern Maid coming away in great style at; the winning end. The Ariki, up to .the time of her withdrawal from the race, was showing a big improvement on previous form. The second-class cetitreboarders'.race, for a trophy-presented by the Canter-.I bury 'Yacht and Motor-boat Club, was responsible for some keen competition, but here again one "boat was caught' ona "luff-out;" a foul resulting. One wonders, if Evans Bay is getting too narrow. ' The one redeeming' feature -of these opisodes. was the - readiness with which the skippers at fault upheld the traditions of the sport by withdrawing from the race and reporting to the, sailing c.ommittee. The recent naval visit continues to be a topic of conversation and.'anecdote. There have been- numerous suggestions for a further effort in this direction, both from, club members'and friends in the service, and it is just possible that another meeting may bo arranged. '
