.;'.' The 'ladies'; diving ' championship, which, was; recently decided at the Kid; diford Baths, although/ contested:' bytwo entrants only, was .a decidedly superior- exhibition to. that given by the men.; Both Miss ''.Price ■ and Mrs. "Penman - performed very creditably,, with the honours-going to the former, and in some /instances. each1 handled v the intricate /dives well.' Miss Price has developed a finished, style, and" while not as cohsistent/as is. usual;.she nevertheless won with a comfortable margin pfvpbiuts. _. She'bids fair to be onet.of the-; best-lady divers yet seen in the country. ;Mrs: Penman':has improved considerably all roundy;and with further practice and 'experience should be capable ofsreaching good class.': ' , ■ \. ' , J. Williams had little, difficulty in; retaining his title of backstroke champion at lastw.-Veli's carnival .'at' the new Petono Bat)is. Opposed by Milligan and Spry; he. swam-.the first tlap with them, I but-from, then onwards, he took the lead to ■'.; gradually ; increase ' 'his . margin, eventually winning-in-easy:fashion-by. . yards from-. Milligan," whowas twelve yards /in front, of- Spry.- / The winner has not.yet" beQn fully. cite'nded since competing in' this class of championship and his times therefore are not, comparable,. but; he/ appears to have definitely ■ improved. Milligan and Spry. were starters for the first time, and; although well 'beaten, .should ! improve with experience, -especially the former, who promises to; be. a versatile performer.; / , -"■.■•■ ;
'■/;■ In" the schoolgirls '• championship distances, Miss Pieot ; again •demonstrated that i she is -likely to reach top' class: as a/ swimmer. Her two /victories were easily accomplished,-while her times were'really good for one so young and with --limited', experience. :It is understood that she-will not be called upon to do much! racing for 'd year or two, and this is a wise procedure which will ultimately/bring:results.,--..■/.- : ■ . / In 'the"-"toys' section/ B. Mclnnes proved the ultimate winner, and^ in each of the four events lie swam consistently. He shows; a'neat style and. looks the type that' will improve': Wall,- of Scots College, swam very erratically otherwise he would have beaten. ■• Mclnnes. Botli at Te Aro Baths, and agafn on Saturday, he lost" his races by. misjudging thb; distance and swimming all over the baths, throwing away his chance of success, which; from the manner of his'advantage, appeared very' bright." He shows promise of dovelopingintb a "ood distance swimmer. .//-.'■" ■ ■
M. Hopping'had no difficulty iii Vvirimtfg the intermediaW, titles;, although on Saturday, E.
