IMPRESSIVE DEBUT

SIR JOHN'S GOOD EFFORT

(From "Vedette.") SYDNEY, December 14. Although Dominion horses* have not recently been meeting with outstanding success in Australia, New Zealand can still' bleed some good ones. Botoie Sir John won the Kirkham Stakes at Warwick Fai m on Saturday ho u<i b lecognised as a, \eiy piomismg colt, but before the lace, when paiaded m the birdcage, he looked only halt icady. This proved quite j, delusion so i.ir .is summing up, the race was concealed, lor after giving the leaders five or six length's' start at the turn he finished biilhantlv'to detpat the move expcticnced Sun Clad.

Sir John, who is trained by U. Price for Mi. E. Mo^s, the owner ot Vcilmontl, was bred by Mr. Or. M. Cuine, and was 6old last Januaiy as a yeaihug for 7.50 guineas. .1. T. Jdmiesfon ■was mnnei-up m the bidding, and nas more than interested in Saturday's lace, tor he supplied the favourite in Myia Tip, a speedy «,istcr to Closing Time.

There is every evidence that Sir John will reach top class. On Saturday he was only half ready, and "was not so smart at the barrier naturally aa many of the other .runners who had had some racing. He was going strongly when the straight was readied, and '• McCarten commenced to ride him hande and heels. He improved, and then McCarten. gave him one cut with the. whip. He then fairly bounded and ran to the leader/ Sun Clad; to beat him by half a length. •

Sun Clad had the beet of the race until the last few stricles. He began like.a shot and was soon careering along in front. He is a smart colt, so that Sir John's* performance is even more meritorious.

Caravel 'Girl, who carries the Greenline colours and is trained by W. Booth, surprised by her third place. She just defeated Myru. Tip, who was a big disappointment. She had shown so much pace on the track at Kandwiek ,that it wris thought' she would have little difficulty in' leading the field. On the contrary, she was never able to get to better than second place, and Bartle was niggling at her some distance from home to keep her there.

Of the beaten division, Short Wave shaped best. He did not begin too well, yet was iip handy to the leaders from start to finish. He is a suburban winner, arid likely to do better, in good company on one of the main courses', even at Raridwick.
