SUPERIOR IMPROVED

NEW PLYMOUTH JOTTINGS

(Special from "Hurry On.") NEW PLYMOUTH, December 15. With all the New Plymouth-trained horses competing at the Taranaki Meeting during the holidays the track work is becoming more interesting. The hard state of the tracks has prevented a great deal of galloping and all work is taking place on the plough. . ■ < Superior has thrown off the lameness that has been troubling her and is going the right way again. She is as full of life as ever, and a strong boy has always to be put on her even for pace work. Headmistress continues to' impress. Though she has not been. asked to gallop fast, she is doing a lot of three-quarter pace work and she is doing it in great style. She: will require only three or four gallops to be in great trim for the holiday racing. ' ''' Though still O; little on the big side Refresher is pleasing his connections, and he showed by the manner in which; he reeled oft' half a mile on the plough the other morning that he has lost none of his pace. A day or so of good rain would improve his prospects. On Tuesday morning Courtega was going much better than Arvada at the conclusion of five furlongs on the plough. She was under a strong pull at the finish, and her performance was impressive. She will be an improved filly by BoxingfDay. Lalla Quex, in the same stable, is doing everything that is being asked of her and doing it well. However, on her showings at Trentham in October this halfsister to Ridsemount does not appear to be too reliable. Tahurangi lightened up considerably as a result of his racing at Fcildhiß and has been restricted to steady pace work since his return. He can muster up a fine turn of pace and should race prominently during the holidays. Easter Time's fetlock has made a splendid recovery and he is back doing halfpace work again. He will probably be given a run in the Flying Handicap on the opening day of the Taranaki Meeting. Merry Way continues to hit out in a pleasing manner and invariably has it on her companion in a gallop. She looks a good prospect i'or a hack race or two during the holidays. She is much more tractable than formerly and has lost all her two-year-old waywardness. The hard tracks are rittt in favour of Orapai and he is tender in front. Otherwise, he ia looking fit and muscular, and when rain comes he will probably throw off hia trouble. Bold Bid is on the improve again and in putting a lot more dash into bis work. He has been pulling hard in his pace work during the last few mornings and will be allowed to bowl along next week.
