UNEMPLOYMENT
CHAMBERLAIN'S OPINION
SLOW RECOVERY PREDICTED
(Beceived December 16, 2.45 p.m.) LONDON, December 15. Sir Austen Chamberlain, speaking at Halifax, said that there is every hope that the current financial year will produce a substantial surplus. "Although I cannot see any reason why, unemployment should not continue to decrease," he added, "I believe tha truth of my statement that we should not reduce it to really small proportions for ten years is being recognised. I made the statement becauseI wanted employers and workers ■ to ascertain by discussion whether it was possible to share work more widely without unduly increasing costs. I want the public to realise that if'unemployment is going to continue w« must draw up a permanent scheme to meet these new unpleasant conditions."
