EASTBOURNE AFFAIRS
BOROUGH COUNCIL MEETING
The Mayor (Mr. E. W. Wise) presided at a meeting of the Eastbourne Borough Council last evening. Also present were Councillors M. Magill, G. H. Andrews, A. H. Macandrew,. D. Bowie, A. T. B. Duncan, and G. Y. Berry. The Eastbourne Fire Brigade wrote thanking the council for granting tht» brigade eight uniforms and caps. The Eastbourne Ratepayers' Association urged "that as no public telephone was available at tho southern end of the bay, the small bell adjacent to the fire station should be dismantled and re-erected at a convenient position on tho main road, so that it could be used in case of fire. It was suggested that the council should take steps to exploit the possible source of income from advertising on ferry steamers. The matter of the firebell and a suggestion about street lighting- were 'referred to the works committee, and the question of advertising on ferry steamers was referred to. the transport committee. . The Town Clerk (Mr. C. L. Bishop) reported that to the end of November the sum of £5551 was collected in rates, as against £2341 for the same period last year, when no discount was allowed. Everything in connection with the conversion of loans was proceeding satisfactorily. The Local Bodies' Loans Board had approved the conversion .of the water and drainage debentures. The acting waterworks inspector reported that the water pumped to the Eastbourne Borough supply for November was 3,662,000 gallons. The maximum supply commenced on December 1 with 125,000 gallons daily. The total number of consumers to date was 475.
