SUCCESSFUL DANCES
MONOWAI EN FETE
A CHARMING SCENE ,
The £ 'Younger Set," members of the English-speaking Union, are to be congratulated on the success of the dance held on board the Monowai last evening, with generous assistance from those on board 'the. ship, and in authority. : The scene was a charming one, the promenade -deck being enclosed with canvas and flags and decorated tastefully. Sitting, out places were permitted everywhere practically, and all of the 250 or so of guests had a pleasurable evening of a rather unusual kind. There are two comfortable lounges which were used, also a musicroom, a smoking-room, and the guests were allowed to wander at pleasure, even, as far as the bridge. Supper was served in the beautiful saloon din-ing-room, always handsomely decorated, and last night it was gay with scarlet ixias in the central vases, flags of various countries, and the ship's pennant making' altogether a bright setting to niaiiiy pretty froc-ks and guests. Chinese lanterns' were used effectively in many directions, and a floodlight added to the gaiety of a very charming scene. Good music was provided, the orchestra, having loud-speakers to carry to all parts of the ship. "Father Neptune" was a welcome visitor, aud handed favours and gifts from his sea- j chest. Two artistic items were given by pupils of Kathleen O'Brien, Miss Joan Baine and Clarence Poppleton, and a solo dance by Miss Baine. Mr. W. B. Matheson. gave a brief explanation of the aims and objects of the union. The host and h.ostess were Mr. and Mrs. O. Benge (assisted by Miss Anscombe), the former being president of the branch.
