BENEATH ST. PAUL'S

FLOW OF SUBSOIL WATER

EXPERT RECOMMENDATIONS

(Received December 13, 2 p.m.) LONDON, December 12. The existence of a "pond" underneath the foundations of St. Paul's Cathedral is disclosed in a report by Sir Alexander Gibb and Mr. Ralph Freeman, who says that it is essential that the flow of subsoil water in the future should not be appreciably varied, and recommend that a defined area in the neighbourhood of the cathedral be controlled with a view to avoiding1 excavations. The total subsidence in the central part of the cathedral in. thirtyseven years is stated to be 2.39 inches. The investigators urge that three experts be appointed under Act of Parliament to control the area, -which requires the most rigorous attention.
