FIGHTS FOR VICTORY

EMOTION WINS RIMUTAKA

Emotion, the "certainty" that failed to come oft' at Masterton last week, made some atonement by leading practically all the way to win the Rimutaka Handicap. He had to fight off successive challenges in tse straight, but he did so valiantly and he deserved the win.

It was only the second race that this seven-year-old chestnut has had since he was purchased by his present owner, Mr. 0. Nelson, for 15 guineas at the'Bidwill dispersal sale at Easter,, so that he was the second horse sold at that auction to register a win yesterday.' He is a. gelding by Lord Quex from the Elevation mare Submersion, the dam also of Subjection and Projection, and in spite of his age lie may yet win good races, for recently lie has been setting the tracks on fire at Hastings. When owned by the late Mr. Bidwill he attractively won at the Wellington Meeting two years ago, but after that he went sore and was off the scene for some considerable time. ■ In the race Emotion took charge from Milnrow within the first furlong. He led into the straight closely followed by Grand Review, Eupator, Epigram, King Thomond, and Bettws-y-coed, and it was then that his real difficulties began. He had to dispose of challenges first from Grand Review and next from Epigram, and then near ,the finish King Thomond lodged a more threatening claim, which he beat off only by half a length. A neck back Epigram was expended in third place, with Eupator a fair fourth, followed by Bettws-y-coed, Wheiuma, Kalmuck, Milnrow, and Trivet. ' _ ; Emotion and King Thomond, at identical weights, simply reversed their Masterton placings behind West Tor, showing that Emotion improVed. slightly the more with the race. The form between them was consistent, 1 for both had different riders yesterday. : A win is- now due at any time for King Thomond, but; Emotion too is liable to go on with it. . * Epigram, the favourite, after working into a good position in the early stages, looked the winner when he lodged his challenge on" the outer of the leaders at the false rail, but he could not sustain the effort and was weakening at the end. He was three horses at least out o"n the track all the way, and at the fast pace set that'; probably just robbed him of the necessary store to gather in victory. Eupator, for whom there was unexpectedly good support, was well enough placed from the start but was not quite good enough. Bettw&-y-coed ran a shitty race. Whetuma was beginning a great run when checked at the head ot the straight and his effort was distinctly promising. Kalmuck went in improved fashion and is coming to hand. Bonnie Vale was showing up on the turn, but she was very wide out and it was not surprising that she faded from the scene. Grand Review petered out after a brief challenge at the straight entrance. Trivet, after beginning slowly, was finishing well.
