PROSTRATION NEATLY

GOOD WIN IN HACK SIX

Prostration, at a great price for a favourite, had to put up a very attractive performance to win the October Handicap, and there can be little doubt now that he is a hack above ordinary quality. All the qualities required to win such a race were revealed_ in him, and he came through the test with colours flying. In such a field it was almost a sine qua non to begin well, and Prostration did this from one of the outside positions in the draw. Then, after following the fit and speedy Acceptable to the straight, it- was necessary for him to go after this horse, and he did it successfully, gaining the upper hand less than a hundred yards from the post. Finally he had to show true courage in withstanding a determined challenge .from a horse with the last run.on him, and he did this too. He bent Senegal only by a.head, but his win wns brimful of merit.

The winner is a three-year-old brown.

gelding by Lord Qnex from the Kilbrouey mare Termination, the dam ot' Stanchion (Wellington Cup) and Cessation, and he was bred by the late Mr. W. E. Bidwill, at whose dispersal sale last Easter he was purchased for 85 guineas on behalf of the Wellington sportsman Mr. H. W. Moss, who handed him to T. R. George to train. He had one race as a two-year-old, and in four starts this season "he has been twice a winner and twice second. There certainly looks to be a future ahead of this customer.

Senegal was always one of the leading bunch, but with the drop on the winner ho just: failed to turn it into account. Ho finished very resolutely, and a good win is liable to come his way in the near future.

Acceptable showed all his known brilliance, but the long straight proved just too severe a task for him. His effort, nevertheless, was a most creditable one. Catalogue was running on fourth, aud is on the up-grade again. Southdown was the -unlucky runner, being squeezed back at- the start to settle down last, then dashing through over the closing stages into a close seventh place. Diagano, always well up, was a good fifth. Pegged Exchange, after being one of the leading trio early, weakened at the finish into sixth place. A bunch some lengths from Southdown was headed by West Tor (who did not appear to hit out on the hard track, and was always well back), Ralphyllis, Normandy, and Arastar (prominent early); The time was again very fast for hacks.
