OBJECTIVE ACHIEVED
FINAL COMMUNITY SING
When community sings were started in Wellington it was hoped to raise the sum of £500 each season to aid the Mayor's Relief Fund. During the season just concluded, this mark was not only reached but exceeded by about £50. The Town Hall was well filled last evening for the final community sing of the season, the song leaders being Mr. Will Mason and Mr. Owen Pritcliard, with Mr. Frank Crowther and Miss Iris Mason at the piano and Mr. Lawrence Haggitt at the organ. The Mayor (Mr. T. C. A. Hislop) heartily thanked the chairman' (Mr. E. Palliser) and Messrs. Mason, Pritchard, Crowther, and Haggitt- for their valuable assistance during the season. Mr. Hislop also thanked the 2YA concert committee for its help, and referred to the wonderful response given by the public and listenersin to the appeal for tho Mayor's Relief Fund, which had benefited by over £500. During the sing solos were sung by the visiting artists, Miss Myra Sawyer, Mr. Drayton Venables, and Mr..Henri Tahiwi, and two popular songs were also sung by Mrs. Wilman, one of a party of Ngaio residents present. ! Much variety was provided throughout the sing, one of the most amusing features being a huge "thermometer," which recorded the quality of the performance. It was stated that the balloon at the 120 degrees mark had been burst only once previously, at Wanganui. After many strenuous efforts, the 120 degrees mark was reached near - the conclusion of the sing, and the balloon burst with a loud report. Mr. Charles Proctor (Uncle Jeff of 2YA) was introduced to the audience by Mr. Will Mason, and conducted the singing for a period. The winner of the popular limerick competition was announced as being Mrs. Fowler, The Grange, Waverley. In thanking those who had done .so much towards making the season a success, Mr. Palliser mentioned the good work of Mrs. Corlett and Mrs. Pritchard, and also the assistance given by the Town Hall staff.
The evening was brought to a close with tho singing of "Land of Hope and Glory" and the National Anthem.
