SPEECH COMPETITIONS
The annual speech competitions Tor the award o£ the Captain R. J. S. Seddon Memorial Cups were held recently in the Memorial Hall at Wellington College and proved to be most successful, a- very high standard being reached by all candidates. Mr. C. A. L. Treadwell acted 'flB judge for the prepared speech competition held on October 12. There were 12 entrants, the subject being, "One of the great .personages of the present day. in any sphere of life" The time allowed for each speaker was 10 minutes. Mr. Treadwell made the following awards:—P. C. R. Wells (Mussolini), 1; L. Jackson (Albert Schweitzer), 2; R. L. S. Black (Winston Churchill), 3. Mr. Treadwell pointed out that most of the speakers, while making an excellent showing, lacked fire and conviction. He gave sgme very sound advice on the art of public, speaking. The competitors were afterwards entertained at afternoon tea by Mrs. Armour. ' The unprepared speech contest was held on the afternoon of October 18, the judge being Mr. W. E. Leicester. There were 22 entrants, the order of speech and subjects being chosen by lots. This was an excellent contest, the standard being noticeably higher than that- of last year. Tho- results were:—S. W. P. Mirams (Pictures), 1; T. D. C. Childs (Tramping), 2; W. A. S. Armour (Examinations), 3. Other speakers who received special mention were:—R. C. B. Scott (Music), P. C. R Wells (Shaving), D. J. Robinson (The Radio), and V. C. Hall (Dress). Mr. Leicester gave hints and advice to every competitor, and some ,most helpful instruction in the art of public speaking.
