FIRST DAY AT TRENTHAM

BRILLIANT SUNSHINE

Though the beautiful weather had tempted a large number of people to Trentham yesterday for the first day of the Wellington Racing Club's Spring Meeting, tho frocks worn by the women racegoers were by no means gay in colour. There were many smart ensembles, some having ventured into summer materials, but the majority adhered to the trim tailored suit and closefitting hat, or the "swagger" suit, which looks its best with a semi-sailor hat tilted well over one eye. As the clay wore on coats appeared, many 01 them having caped shoulders or wide epaulettes. . There was scarcely one bngimycoloured suit, navy, grey, or black and white being particularly popular. The only touches of colour were seen m scarves and hats, some of the latter being wide-brimmed and very becoming. Brown, in many varying shades, was worn, ranging from deep mahogany to palo beige tones. The grounds surrounding tho course were looking particularly picturesque, the lawns richly green, the flower beds I full of colour, and the trees lovely with 1 their fresh spring green.- A military I Kind played musical selections during tho day. { VICEREGAL PARTY. Their Excellencies the GovernorGeneral and Lady Bledisloe arrived with a party from Government House, and were met by the president and stewards of the club, who afterwards entertained them at luneheou. The president (Mr. Erie Riddiford) and Mrs. Riddiford also entertained a large party at tea, crystal vases of Iceland poppies and ranunculi decorating the- tables. Her Excellency wore a crepe frock of turquoise green with collar of old lace, under a cloth coat of the same shade with collar of summer fur and a small twisted turban. In the party were Lieutenant Rodney Thomson, R.N., A.D.C., Captain J. W. Tweedie, A.D.C., Miss Diana Harris (who woro an ensemble and small hat of honey beige cloth), Sir Stephen and Lady Allen (the latter wearing a mahogany brown ensemble and hat with sablo furs), and Mr. and Mrs. John Grigg, Longbeach (the latter wearing a dove grey honeycomb coat and skirt, blouse striped with red, and a rod hat). LUNCHEON GUESTS. Others invited to luncheon at tho president's tablo included Mr. and Mrs. G. Wood (England), Miss D. Triggs, Lady Carncross, tho Hon. C. E. ami Mrs. Macmillan, Mr: T. H. Lowry, Mr. and Mrs. A. S. Elworthy, Mr. and Mrs. O. S. Watkins,- Colonel Curtis, Captain. and Mrs. C. Sinclair-Thomson, Mrs. J. F. Vogel, Miss A. Nelson, and Mr. J. C. Crawford. Those at the vice-president's table with Mr. and Mrs. C. W. Tringham were Sir Charles Clifford, Mr. W. L. Clifford, Mr. Thomas Duncan, Mr. W. Cooper (president of the. Masterton Racing Club) and Mrs. Cooper, Mr. E. B. Mooro (president of tho Nelson Racing Club) and Mrs. Mooro, and Mr. F. T. H. Bell (secretary of the Canterbury Racing Club).
