FAREWELL FUNCTION
PRIEST LEAVES PETONE
The Petone Working Men's Club hall was packed to its capacity last evening on the occasion of the official farewell' to the Rev.. Father J. Murphy, the assistant i priest at Petone, who has been transferred ;to Westport. Among those present were the Rev. Fathers Quealy, Fletcher, Treahy, Nolan, Fitzgerald, Uhlenburg, and Mr. T. 1 Murphy (Pallia), brother of the Rev., ; Father Murphy. ! The chairman, Mr. J.'Cavr, stressed thegreat debt the parish owed to Father Murphy,, who, during his tenure of office, worked with unflagging enthusiasm in • keeping the. parish in a high state" of efficiency. The "time had now come to part, and it was with great regret that their beloved priest had now to leave them . for new fields of work. The Rev. Father P. Quealy, parish . priestj also mentioned how Father Murphy had been a loyal helpmate to him during j his stay, and, it was with sorrow that they now had to say farewell. Mr. W. Coles, on behalf qf the parish, spoke on the great work that Father ' Murphy had done, saying that many institutions ,such as the tennis club, the 1 Boy Scouts, and several sodalities all > owed their existence to Father Murphy.. , Mr. J. Hepburn, the Scoutmaster, also > spoke. i Mr. Coles presented Father 'Murphy with a well-filled wallet, as a mark of the regard and esteem in which he was ! held by the parish. In responclug, Father 'Murphy thanked ' everyone, for .their great tributes, and ' said that, though he was leaving, he would ' always cherish memories of Petone and its residents, who, had all combined to > make his stay a very enjoyable one. :. During the evening musical items were ! I'endered by Misses* N. and C. Syme, Misses M. Ball, V. Morrison, E. Gamble, Mrs. McGurk, Messrs. A.- Saunder ', and J. Hickey, and the Rev. Father 1 Treahy, and the Boy Scouts. Afterwards ; a dance was held.
