COMFORTS FOR SUFFERERS
Beports on the, work of the Bed Cross Society and plans for the aiding of those in need were discussed a* the monthly meeting of the Wellington centre of the society on Tuesday. Mr. D. G. Clark occupied the. chair, other members present being Mcsdanies L. Blundell and Herzog, Miss M. Lowe, Messrs A. H. Bath, 8. F. Wright and M. S. Galloway (secretary). Negotiations have been in progress betweon the society and the South Africans Veterans' Association regarding the supplying of comforts to pationts in the Public Hospital and the mental hospital at Porirua in whom the association is interested. The society volunteered to undertake work, if the association makes some contribution towards expenses, which the association is quite prepared to do. Beference was made to the installation of "talkie" apparatus at Pukeora Sanatorium, and the Post and Telegraph Department was thanked for its action in readjusting the wireless mast at the Bed Cross Home after it had been blown down in the recent storm. VISITS TO HOSPITALS. The usual visits were paid by the official visitors to the Public Hospital, Ewart Hospital and Porirua Mental Hospital. Cigarettes, tobacco, and other comforts are distributed by the visitors, and various other duties are performed. At these institutions approximately 290 patients are under the care of the society. The medical officer at Pukeora submitted a report stating that the sub-committees had carried out visits to the sanatorium, distributing comforts to patients. The institutions at Napier and Waipukurau were not forgotten. • ■ ■ During the month nine complete sets of underclothing had been distributed to needy ex-soldiers in the Wellington district. These were given in proved cases,of necessity on the discharge of the patient from hospital. The secretary reported that there is a great deal of genuine distress among eX-aervicemen and their dependants in-the district, and it was resolved that the centra should approach the Dominion headquarters with a view to securing a grant of money to meet this special emergency. '
